Parent Survey:

The 2010 parent survey is now on-line! It takes about 30 minutes to complete -- and your participation is vital. Please answer the survey as honestly as you can -- your input will help us provide the best education possible for your student as well as continuously improve our school.

Look for the action item at the end of the survey so we will know that you have completed your survey! We're looking for 100% participation!

Please click on this link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/portal2010

The deadline is March 5th. Please help us to meet our goal!
Thank you to those parents who have already completed the survey!

Volunteers Needed:

On Thursday, April 1, 2010, Rooms 20 and 21 will be presenting a brand new fine arts performance entitled "U.S. Presidents." It's going to be a phenomenal show, and our performers are already preparing themselves for this exciting night. Now, we need some enthusiastic parents to help us put together an eye-catching backdrop, and assist with costume and prop needs. If you're interested, please return the form that will be sent home this week and return it on or BEFORE Monday, March 1.

Curriculum:

Language Arts

While our reading of Dear Mr. Henshaw continues, the bulk of attention this week will be devoted to the persuasive writing genre. We'll be discussing the purpose of persuasive writing, tips for constructing a persuasive piece, and how a writer can evaluate the quality of their persuasive work. Our classes will work in small groups to discuss examples of persuasion and propose arguments for & against particular positions. We'll begin writing our own persuasive essay as the week concludes.

On the spelling front, our root word study continues. These Latin and Greek roots are the basis for meaning in a huge number of English words. Some of the words we're studying are very tough to spell and understand, so we have been working on definitions and word use in class, as well as sorting these words to increase our recognition of roots. We're also completing definition worksheets on Wednesdays for additional support. We recommend keeping a good dictionary handy during the coming weeks! Please note that we have adjusted the total amount of words to 14 at this point.

Math

In 4th grade math, we've transitioned from fraction work to the related study of decimals. Since these concepts are so closely linked, we'll continue to use fractions to solidify our understanding of decimals representing parts of a whole.

In 5th grade math, we're beginning our Geometry Unit. We've begun with a review of basic vocabulary and angle measurement. We'll be using our protractors to refine our ability to measure angles and then move on to our study of triangles and quadrilaterals.

Social Studies

Students are currently working on their Explorer Keynote Projects and will begin their essays soon. These will be the culminating activities of our Explorer Unit. The graded tests went home today. Please be sure to ask your child to share their test with you. A parent signature is required for tomorrow.

Science

Our Living Systems unit is drawing to a close. We'll prepare to test our understanding of these concepts with another I-Check on Thursday this week. Review of the processes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration will be key to a successful I-Check. We've done a LOT of work with these concepts in class, so we simply need to apply what we already know to successfully respond to our I-Check questions. We'll also be finishing up some great posters on nutrients, food groups, and regional diets. Finally, the unit will be concluding with a technology project to be introduced on Friday (if time allows)- more details to come soon. Homework note: Kitchen Science is due NEXT week, Tuesday, March 2.

Grammar focused on sentence structure is ongoing. Also, the novel Dear Mr. Henshaw continues to capture our attention in many ways! We find a lot of ways to connect our our own experiences to this story, and the book provides a variety of stimulating topics to write about.

Math

In 4th grade math, we're actually going to be completing our fraction work this week. Students are expected to know how to compare fractions, find equivalent fractions, identify and write mixed numbers and improper fractions, and how to determine the fraction of a whole group. We'll have a test on WEDNESDAY to see how effective our learning and instruction have been.

In 5th grade math, we are finishing the first half of our graphing unit this week and students will be tested on the concepts we have covered. Students will be working on reading, plotting, and interpreting points on a coordinate grid next. They will then learn how to graph functions using algebraic equations.

Social Studies

Last week, students took their Explorer test and were given the expectations for creating their Keynote presentation and research essay. There is no due date set for these projects yet. Last week, students also were introduced to the states of the Southeast. There will be a geography quiz on Friday of this week.

Science

In our Living Systems unit, we're wrapping up Investigation 3, which focuses on food production in plants and cellular respiration. This is the last of the three Living Systems investigations. We'll prepare to test our understanding of these concepts with another I-Check when we return from the break. We'll also be doing some very thorough reading and response to the activities in class before we take our break.

The First February Reminders

Dear Room 20 & 21 parents and students,

Can you BELIEVE it's February already? In a couple of weeks, we'll take a winter break, but there is a lot going on in the classroom between now and then. First of all, we'll finish our fine arts performance auditions this week and assign parts- good luck to all our terrific students! Fortunately, our new play has a huge number of interesting (and challenging) roles; we're guaranteed to have a good part for one and all. In addition, our students have a big social studies test coming up on Thursday (more information below!) Of course, there are the usual homework responsibilities this week too, so this might be a good time to clean out unnecessary items from binders, restock pencils and binder paper, and double-check homework "green sheets" for accuracy and completed work. Make it a family project; it might make for an hour well-spent during this week.

Language Arts

We're really enjoying our experience of reading Dear Mr. Henshaw! It was so appropriate that we had an author (Jeff Savage) visit our school last week, since the main character in our novel (Leigh Botts) has an ongoing correspondence with an author (Mr. Henshaw.) We continue with timelines related to the story sequence, we're responding to the literature with letters, free responses, postcards, and more questions about the text. Also, in our remaining language arts time, we've completed personal multiparagraph essays, and we review summary writing this week. Grammar focused on sentence structure is ongoing.

On the spelling front, we have turned our attention to word roots. These Latin and Greek roots are the basis for meaning in a huge number of English words. Some of the words we're studying are very tough to spell and understand, so we have been working on definitions and word use in class. as well as sorting these words. We're also completing definition worksheets on Wednesdays for additional support. We recommend keeping a good dictionary handy during the coming weeks!

Math

In 4th grade math, we're really getting comfortable with fractions. Our initial activities involved hands-on work that allowed us to create parts of a whole in several ways, explore equivalent fractions, and practice addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators. We'll be dealing with common denominators, along with multiplication and division of fractions, during this week's classes.

In 5th grade math, we are beginning our study of data collection and graphing. Students will be reviewing concepts learned in prior grades and then applying this knowledge to double graphs, circle graphs, line plots and analysis of various types of graphs and when it's appropriate to use a particular type of graph as opposed to another.

Social Studies

Our unit of study on explorers is coming to a close and the test is scheduled for Thursday, February 4. A study guide will be provided as well as study tips and hints for reviewing. This week students will be given the expectations for creating a Keynote presentation on a particular explorer with a partner in class and then transferring information gathered into a research essay. There is no due date set for these projects yet.

Science

In our Living Systems unit, we've begun work on Investigation 3, which begins with food production in plants. A big part of this investigation is a review of the scientific method, with a particular emphasis on recording results, interpreting their meaning, and drawing conclusions supported by our results. We're taking our time with this, since conclusions tend to be the most difficult concept for elementary scientists to grasp.

Calendar of Events:

Tues., Feb., 2 - Hyde Middle School - 6th Grade Parent Information Night
Thur., Feb. 4 - Social Studies Explorer Test
Thur., Feb. 4 - 4/5 Winter Band Concert
Thur., Feb. 4 - 7:00 p.m. Kennedy Middle School- 6th Grade Parent Information Night

MYSTERY STATE CLUES:

This state used to be an independent nation.
The state's name comes from a native word that means "homeland."
Two active volcanoes can be found in this state.
It was the last state to join the United States.
Which state is it?
