2/28-3/4 Weekly Reminders

Weekly Reminders: Rooms 20 & 21

Dear Room 20 & 21 Parents,

Welcome back from a much-needed winter break. As we enter the month of March, and the first month of spring, we'll definitely be "coming in like a lion!" Each student should review their goals in preparation for our upcoming conferences in the middle of this month. How are you doing? Have you achieved your goals, or is there still something you need to make progress on to have a successful year? As a parent, what growth have you seen in your student? What do you feel is a continued focus area for your child? Your teachers look forward to the chance to speak with students and parents about the work we're doing here at school, and we enjoy the shared responsibility of working toward academic and personal achievements for each our our students. Until then, let's all take a look at our performance so far, and let's plan for a terrific finish to our 2010-2011 school year!

Parent Survey is now online!

It’s Survey Time!! We would like to invite you to take part in our annual School Survey. Your feedback on the survey is critical to the school as the survey results are used by the School Site Council to create our school goals. The survey will be “live” until Monday, March 11, 2010. After the survey, we’re having a raffle for a group of kids to have lunch with Mrs. Ales! Fun!

To complete the survey, follow these steps -- Go to the school website, www.portalpenguins.org, and:

1) Click on the link to the survey.

2) Complete one survey for each child attending Murdock-Portal.

3) After you have completed the survey, print the last page of the survey – fill in your child’s name and room number and return this slip to the classroom teacher to enter in to our raffle!

Thank you for your participation in making our school a wonderful place! Again, your feedback for the survey is so important and we value your input.

Note: If you tried to take the survey during the break and had some technical problems, we believe that they are all sorted out, so you may log on and take the survey now.

San Juan Bautista Field Trip

Our trip to Mission San Juan Batista is this Thursday, March 3, 2011. We leave for our trip at 8:30am, and we will return by 2:50pm. All students and chaperones will bring a disposable paper bag lunch on that date. We will spend a portion of our time outside, so please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather before arriving at school.

Interested in helping out?

Yes, it is now less than SIX weeks until Rooms 20 and 21 will perform the incredible play entitled "Geology Rocks!" If you've ever wondered if learning about rocks, minerals, fossil fuels, geologic time, and tectonic plates could be funny, then you won't want to miss our upcoming fine arts performance on Thursday, April 7th at 6:30pm in our multipurpose room at Portal. We are looking for interested parents to help support us with stage design, costumes, day of the event preparations, and treats for the evening. If you would be interested in ANY of these volunteer opportunities related to our play, please send us a quick e-mail reply. We will plan on meeting with those interested parents sometime next week.

Parent Teacher Conferences:

In this Thursday's folder you will find the parent/teacher conference appointment schedule. If you would please sign and return your confirmation as soon as possible, it would be helpful. We have worked hard to fit all of the conferences in within a reasonable time, and with 30-31 students each, there are not many slots left open throughout the conference period, so it is difficult to reschedule. We understand if you cannot make the assigned time due to a prior commitment, but it would help us tremendously if you were able to conference with us on the assigned date and time. Thank you in advance!

Valentine's Day Reminders

Weekly Reminders: Rooms 20 & 21

Dear Room 20 & 21 Parents,

Happy Valentine's Day to one and all! Let's all hope that we've enjoyed a day when anyone could be an extra-special friend just by having said "Happy Valentine's Day" as a greeting. After all, our Rockhopper students have a responsibility to be "upstanders" in our school community (as part of our Project Cornerstone community-building philosophy), so what better way to begin than by greeting one another in a positive, fun manner starting each day at school? Our students can even try this out on their teachers- we enjoy a smiling face and a warm greeting too! Let's be "loud and proud" of our great Portal environment- every moment can be an uplifting experience if we approach them in a positive, energetic way. And finally, Miss Scourkes and I are positive that our last week before winter break will be a productive and fun-filled week in all subject areas. We're sure that our week-long rest next week will be well-deserved!

The Preparations Have Begun!

If you've ever wondered if learning about rocks, minerals, fossil fuels, geologic time, and tectonic plates could be funny, then you won't want to miss our upcoming fine arts performance on Thursday, April 7th at 6:30pm in our multipurpose room at Portal. After our winter break, we'll be looking for interested parents to help support us with stage design, costumes, day of the event preparations, and treats for the evening. Stay tuned for more on this! For the moment, we've started working with our students this week who are auditioning for a role in the play- ask your student about the song sample they'll be singing and the short set of lines they'll memorize to prepare for their audition. Each student who auditions is guaranteed a role of some sort in the play, but which role will remain a mystery until the auditions are completed. Good luck to all who have chosen to audition; we know you'll do a fabulous job in whatever role you play!

February 7-11 Weekly Reminder

Weekly Reminders: Rooms 20 & 21

Dear Room 20 & 21 Parents,

Groundhog Day has come and gone, and we now know that spring will arrive sooner this year. By the looks of the weather, it looks like spring has already arrived! When conditions are so pleasant outside, it makes sense to take advantage of the ability to enjoy some outdoor exercise as a family. Take a walk around the neighborhood, go for a hike at one of our great regional parks or open space preserves, play a game of tennis or basketball, or just run around the backyard, if you've got one! Exercise allows the mind to function at its peak, so make sure to add exercise to your "to do" list in order to feel positive, refreshed, and motivated for the other moments in your life.
